English

Introduction
In recent years, particularly after the first term of Barack Obama’s presidency, the rivalry between the two global powers, China and the United States, has become increasingly evident. One of the key dimensions of this competition is the military one. The United States and China are currently competing with one another both in regional military presence, especially in the Asia-Pacific, and in the development and deployment of military equipment and capabilities. This military competition has led to a growing strategic focus by the United States on China, thereby reducing the relative importance of West Asia for Washington compared to the past. As a result, the United States has gradually begun to scale back its presence in West Asia. Conversely, China has steadily expanded its role and presence in the region, making substantial investments, particularly in energy, transportation corridors, and other infrastructure projects. Within this context, Iran, as a significant regional actor in West Asia, can utilize the emerging diplomatic opportunities by taking advantage of these developments to enhance and strengthen its diplomatic role.
Literature Review
Numerous studies have been conducted on the military competition between the United States and China, and several have also examined the consequences and opportunities arising from this competition. However, the political implications of this competition for Iran constitute the main innovative aspect of the present study. In what follows, some of these previous studies are briefly reviewed.

Nagy (2023), in a study on the military competition between the United States and China, points to the narrowing gap and the reduction of the power disparity between the two countries in the military domain.
She (2021), in his research, while referring to the relatively balanced military rivalry between China and the United States, emphasizes that the increase in the relative advantage of these two countries vis-à-vis one another has created economic and security opportunities for other states.
Arghavani and Mirsoleymani (2023), in their study, stress that the United States has lost its former dominance in West Asia, while China is in the process of expanding its role and influence in the region.
Research Objectives
This research is guided by the following objectives:
To examine the impact of military competition between the United States and China on the changing balance of power and the evolving geopolitical environment in West Asia, through a new perspective based on the theoretical framework of defensive realism.
To analyze the diplomatic opportunities arising from these geopolitical changes for Iran and to assess their potential to strengthen Iran’s diplomatic position and regional influence.
Methodology
The present study adopts a qualitative approach and employs documentary analysis to explain the diplomatic opportunities arising from the military competition between the United States and China for the Islamic Republic of Iran. The research draws on a body of scholarly articles, books, research reports, and authoritative documents addressing U.S.–China strategic and military competition, shifts in the regional balance of power in West Asia, the regional presence of China and the United States, and Iran’s foreign policy. The required data were collected through a systematic review of relevant scholarly sources and documents, and were selected and analyzed based on their relevance to the research question and the theoretical framework. The theoretical framework of the study is grounded in Structural Opportunity Theory. From this perspective, changes in the distribution of power and transformations in relations among major powers can alter existing structures and create opportunities for other actors, particularly regional powers, to expand their scope for action, enhance their bargaining leverage, and strengthen their diplomatic position.
Discussion
The military competition between the United States and China has affected the distribution of strategic attention between East Asia and West Asia. From the perspective of defensive realism, the growing competition with China has encouraged the United States to place greater emphasis on the Asia-Pacific region. This has led to a relative reduction in Washington’s strategic focus on West Asia, although it does not represent a complete withdrawal from the region.

This shift has created new opportunities for Iran to strengthen its regional position. At the same time, China’s growing economic and political presence in West Asia has provided Iran with opportunities to deepen its relations with Beijing. Cooperation through the Belt and Road Initiative and the 25-year Comprehensive Cooperation Agreement are important examples of this development. These relations can provide Iran with greater flexibility in its foreign policy and help diversify its external partnerships. The changing regional environment may also affect the effectiveness of U.S. pressure on Iran. Although Washington continues to have significant influence in West Asia, the growing involvement of China has created a more complex regional environment. This may provide Iran with additional space to develop economic and diplomatic relations beyond its traditional partnerships.
From the perspective of defensive realism, Iran’s closer relationship with China can be understood as a response to changes in the regional balance of power. Rather than simply seeking to expand its power, Iran can use these relationships to strengthen its security, maintain strategic autonomy, and adapt to changes in the regional environment. Overall, the intensification of U.S.–China military competition has contributed to changes in the geopolitical environment of West Asia and created potential diplomatic opportunities for Iran. These opportunities include deeper cooperation with China, participation in regional connectivity projects, and greater diplomatic engagement with neighboring countries. However, Iran’s ability to benefit from these opportunities depends on its capacity to manage regional tensions and maintain balanced relations with major powers.
Conclusion
The shift in the balance of power and the reduction of U.S. pressure in West Asia have created significant diplomatic opportunities for Iran to strengthen its regional position. From the perspective of defensive realism, the changing regional power structure resulting from the military competition between the United States and China has created new structural opportunities for Iran to expand its diplomatic role and enhance its strategic leverage. Iran’s sensitive geographical location and its position along major international projects and transportation corridors have further contributed to these opportunities. Moreover, the growing transition toward a more multilateral order has increased Iran’s potential to consolidate its position as a major regional power in West Asia and as a middle power at the international level. Overall, the military competition between the United States and China has generated geopolitical and structural opportunities for Iran, enabling it to strengthen its diplomatic influence, deepen strategic partnerships, and enhance its role in regional and international infrastructure and connectivity projects.
